This Mustangs team was famous for the "Pony Express" backfield that consisted of Eric Dickerson (1,617) and Craig James (938 yards.) They finished their season with a 7-3 victory over Pittsburgh in the Cotton Bowl. Dickerson finished 3rd in the Heisman voting despite splitting time with James.
